Gravitational Insecurity
Extreme fear and anxiety that one will fall when one's head position changes. Gravitational security is the sense that one is stable on earth and not endangered by ordinary movements or changes in head position.

Gross Motor Skills
Activities that require the use of large muscles, such as walking, crawling, Hemiparesis: total paralysis of the arm, let, and trunk on the same side of the body.

Handwriting
Often a focus of occupational therapists as writing encompasses a wide range of skills, including fine motor coordination, fine motor strength, visual-motor, visual-perception, sensory processing. Writing skills affect a child’s ability to communicate and to operate independently in the education system

Heavy Touch
A term that occupational therapists use to indicate pressured touch that provides a localized, precise sensation that enables the person being touched to discriminate tactile awareness (i.e., determine shape, size, texture, etc.).

Heavy-work Patterns
Activity that helps to perceive joint and body movement as well as position of the body in space.

Hydrocephalus
A condition in which the brain makes more spinal fluid than can be absorbed, so excess fluid builds up inside the brain causing pressure. There are many causes including birth defects, infection and brain hemorrhage.

Hypertonia
Referring to increased muscle tone (stiffness) that can limit both the variety and speed of movement; has the potential to lead to joint contractures.

Hyposensitivity
Undersensitivity to sensory stimuli, characterized by a tendency either to crave intense sensations or to withdraw and be difficult to engage.

Hypotonia
A decreased/low muscle tone; usually detected during infancy.

Hypersensitivity
Oversensitivity to sensory stimuli, characterized by a tendency to be either fearful and cautious, or negative and defiant.

Ideation
The ability to generate and idea of what to do.

Kinesthesia
The conscious awareness of joint position and body movement in space, such as knowing where to place one's feet when climbing stairs, without visual cues.

Learning Disability
A condition in which a child has normal intelligence, normal vision and hearing, normal motivation and opportunity to learn, but fails to learn "normally" in one or more academic areas. This may affect reading, written language, spelling, math skills or a combination. There may be associated problems with attention, concentration, organization, and planning skills.

Light Touch
Rapid, diffuse touch that has a spreading effect and alerts the nervous system to be aware of possible danger.

Linear Movement
A motion in which one moves in a line, from front to back, side to side, or up and down.
